Goal
To
improve/facilitate basic physical infrastructure and environment
improvement in slums/poor settlements and facilitate access to affordable
and legal housing.
The Slum
Networking Project (SNP)
The Slum Networking Project was launched in 1995
by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in partnership with SAATH and
Arvind Mills. The Slum Networking
Project (SNP), Ahmedabad is an innovative approach for the improvement of
slums. The residents contribute a part of the total cost of infrastructure,
while the AMC provides hardcore physical infrastructure. The NGO is
responsible for community organization and mobilization. The SNP provides
basic infrastructure in an affordable and sustainable way to the slums.
The project motivates and facilitates the target communities, local NGOs
and the private sector to work together in a unique partnership. The
basic premise behind Slum Networking Programme is to provide the same
level and quality of services as provided to a mainstream citizen of
Ahmedabad city.
SNP has been scaled up with other local NGOs.
Activities undertaken under SNP
Under the Slum Networking Project there was
various activities taken up which included Physical Development as one of
the component. This component involved the provision of essential basic
infrastructure service. This included the following:
Ø Individual water supply
Ø Individual sewerage connection
Ø Individual toilet blocks
Ø Storm water disposal arrangement
Ø Paved roads
Ø Street lighting
Ø Tree plantation & Solid waste management
This project has won the 2006 Dubai
International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment (DIABP)
In Chamunadanagar, Ahmedabad, Asian
Development Bank’s Pilot is financing the water and sanitation components
while Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will bear the costs for roads and
street lighting.
Slum
Electrification Program (SEP)
Between late 2001 and
mid-2003, the Ahmedabad Electricity Company (AEC) worked with SAATH and Mahila
Housing SEWA Trust (MHT) to implement a pilot Slum Electrification
Project in Ahmedabad to develop a private sector/civil society
partnership to extend critical legal and reliable modern energy services
to slum communities. In the first
phase of the pilot project provided each household with a legal connection and compact fluorescent light
bulb (CFL).
Objective of the Slum Electrification Project
The main objectives of
the Slum Electrification Project were:
Ø
To ensure availability of safe and legal electricity supply to slum
residents with the help of AMC, AEC and NGOs.
Ø
To minimize process time for new connection, organize and operate a
proper bill recovery system
Ø
To eliminate unauthorized use of electricity, regularize
connections and minimize techno-commercial losses
Ø
To involve slum dwellers in the supply and payment of dues through
CBOs
Ø
To develop strategies for upscaling the programme at all levels
