In 1994, Saath initiated
its livelihood programme, which aims to increase the earning capacities
of the slum residents by enhancing their skill base and making critical
interventions in the employment market.
UMEED is designed for marginalized and under privileged youth
which is being implemented by SAATH, state government and the local
bodies.
UMEED aims to provide young adults from
economically weak backgrounds an opportunity to assimilate in to the
competitive job market.
The first centre was established in
Behrampura under the name Ek Mouka Udaan which was a joint venture
between SAATH and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in the month of
September 2005 in which more than 1,200 youth got employment. Thereafter,
in the month of February 2007 the program was taken up by the government
of Gujarat and renamed as UMEED.
UMEED has helped 783 slum youth gain access
to respectable and sustainable sources of employment and livelihood by
providing professional training to the students to cater efficiently to
the growing demands of the service sector. 540 have been placed with salaries per
month ranging from Rs.1500 to Rs. 5080.
New centers for Umeed have been initiated at
Vadodara, Morbi, Mehsana, Nadiad, Bharuch Patan and Palanpur and at
Vasna, Sabarmati, Sardarnagar and Vatwa in Ahmedabad. In Ahmedabad the
program has also been implemented in partnership with local partners in
