By 2030 almost two thirds of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. A quarter of urban Indians live on less than $15 per month. Development of Gujarat’s cities has been accompanied by an influx of rural poor. There is a fundamental lack of infrastructure and administration to absorb the influx, so slums spring up across cities. Slum communities find themselves caught in a web of poverty. Inherent barriers prevent them from accessing basic services and securing regular work. Rural migrants do not have the skill sets, the education, or the access to basic services and finance that enable them to harness the opportunities offered by a developing India. SAATH’s Urban Programs aim to alleviate this isolation by linking slum communities to services and resources. Since 1989, we have been working to address the complex needs of the urban poor in an integrated, simplified way. Our urban programs provide one-stop service in slum communities, connecting residents to livelihood opportunities, health, education, microfinance, legal and medical services. SAATH also provides a platform for communities to organize and advocate for their needs.
